ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore, Kolkata released sixty thousand fish yearlings of Indian Major Carp (Rohu, Catla and Mrigal) at Ojha toli ghat, Sahibganj, Jharkhand under Namami Gange Program today.
The Chief Guest, Shri Shantanu Thakur, Union Minister of State, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways applauded the initiative of ICAR-CIFRI and Namami Gange and said that ranching will not only help the farmers but also help the river to restore its ecosystem. The Minister also urged the local fishers to not use zero mesh size net fishing.
Shri. Ramnivas Yadav, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, and Shri. Manish Tiwari, IFS, Divisional Forest Officer addressed the gathering and said that this ranching initiative will not only increase the fish population but will also help other aquatic organisms like Dolphin to flourish their population.
Dr. B. K. Das, Directo, ICAR-CIFRI said that the ranching is a part of National Ranching program 2023 in which aims to rejuvenate the native fish stock in the river Ganga. He stressed that fish is not only a important source of livelihood but also play vital role in reducing the pollution status of the river system.
Shri Sanjeev Kumar, Assistant Director of Inland Waterways Authority of India ,Shri Ashok Chaudhary, Secretary of The Jharkhand Eastern Gangetic fisherman's cooperative society Ltd, along with around 100 participants including local fisher's, and common people were present the occasion.
