A three-day State-Level Seminar on 'Entrepreneurship Opportunities for Island Youth and Women in Spices, Arecanut, and Medicinal Plants Sector' organized by ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute in collaboration with the Directorate of Arecanut and Spices Development, Kozhikode, Kerala, and ICAR-All India Coordinated Research Project on Plantation Crops, Kasaragod, Kerala concluded today.
The seminar, inaugurated by Ms Pallavi Sarkar, IAS, Secretary (Agriculture), Andaman and Nicobar Administration, focused on boosting agripreneurship in the islands. In her address, Ms Sarkar lauded ICAR-CIARI’s initiative to foster agri-based businesses and emphasized the importance of aggregating agricultural produce from the scattered islands. She also highlighted the need for effective packaging, branding, and marketing to make these ventures competitive in both national and international markets.
Dr Eaknath B. Chakurkar, Director, ICAR-CIARI, briefed the institute's ongoing technical support to local stakeholders, helping to develop agripreneurship. He stressed the importance of coordination among various sectors to create an environment conducive to start-ups.
The seminar featured presentations from experts on packaging techniques for tropical spices, value addition of medicinal and aromatic plants, and utilizing arecanut waste for entrepreneurship.
Participants also attended practical sessions on scientific harvesting, postharvest processing, value addition of spices, and agro-ecotourism opportunities.
The event saw 71 participants from across the islands, including representatives from the Departments of Agriculture and Rural Development.
