ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore organised a 3-day online collaborative training programme jointly with the National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management (MANAGE), Hyderabad from 20th-22nd March 2024. The training programme aimed to impart expertise and knowledge to the participants on the ‘Nutri-Smart’ fishes in Inland open waters for the nutritional security of the rural populace.
Dr. B. K. Das, Director of ICAR-CIFRI emphasized the importance and role of inland fishes in addressing ‘hidden hunger’ and its role as health food. He highlighted the potential of inland fisheries in addressing various sustainable goals like zero hunger. Dr. Das highlighted the importance of balanced, safe food for women's and child health, emphasizing the high-quality protein, micronutrients, and vitamins found in fish.
Dr. P Chandra Shekara, Director General, MANAGE, Hyderabad, emphasized the need for initiating Agri startups to promote the fisheries sector for the growth of the sector. He expressed concern over challenges like malnutrition and obesity in the present time. Dr. Shekara urged the promotion of fish as a healthy food and said that there is a need to increase per capita consumption in rural areas and lower middle-class populations, especially women and children. He emphasized the potential of flagship programmes for achieving nutritional security, stating that the e-book on the training module will benefit not only participants but also the wider audience.
Dr. Shahaji Sambhaji Phand, Deputy Director, EAAS, MANAGE, Hyderabad, emphasised the importance of fish for nutritional security.
More than 100 participants signed up for the training programme.
