A skill development and capacity building programme was held at ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore, from 5th–11th October 2023.

Dr. B.K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, emphasised the skill development of the fishers on various aspects of inland fisheries management ensuring their sustainable livelihood security. He also urged the fishers to explore their available resources for optimum production and productivity by acquiring scientific knowledge and applications.

Farmers were exposed to both in-house theoretical and practical knowledge along with on-field demonstrations covering different aspects of inland fisheries management.

Besides, the trainees have been taken to field exposure visits which include ICAR-CIFA Kalyani Centre, East Kolkata Wetland (EKW) as well as the ornamental fish markets of Galib Street (Kolkata) etc. The trainees also visited and gained first-hand information on the Bio-floc system, Recirculatory Aquaculture System (RAS), ornamental fish farming practices and fish feed preparation process in the institute feed mill.

The trainees have been provided with hands-on training facilities on different need-based aspects like basic water quality parameters, fish feed preparation using locally available feed ingredients etc.

A total of 31 young farmers from Gopalganj district participated in the training programme.
