Consultative meet on Exploiting the under-exploited Fruits at Central Horticultural Experiment Station

A consultative meeting on Exploiting the fruits and Vegetables of Arid ecosystems was organized today under the Chairmanship of Dr. SK Malhotra, Director, Directorate of Knowledge Management in Agriculture, ICAR, New Delhi.

Dr. Malhotra emphasised the significant research work done by a station to address the poor masses, particularly tribes living in arid agro-climatic conditions in the country. He mentioned that the Horticulture station has developed 24 varieties of fruit crops and 17 varieties of vegetable crops, and also developed many production technologies suited to rainfed semi-arid regions of the country since 1999-2000. Among them, popular varieties are Bael: Goma Yashi, Thar Divya, Jamun: Goma Priyanka, Drumstick: Thar Harsha, and Chironji: Thar Priya are very popular among the farmers of the country. He urged that all varieties should be notified through CVRC and emphasised the need for biochemical profiling of germplasm for health security.

Dr. Arvind K. Singh, Head, CHES, Godhra, presented on the conservation of the largest diverse gene pool in the country for underutilized rainfed semi-arid horticultural crops, including fruits and vegetables. The chairman of the meeting suggested registering the unique germplasm of these underexploited crops.
