ICAR-CIFRI & ICAR-CIFA jointly Ranched Minor Carps Seeds in Mahanadi River

 

ICAR-CIFRI & ICAR-CIFA jointly Ranched Minor Carps Seeds in Mahanadi RiverThe ICAR-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture, Bhubaneswar, Odisha in association with the ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore, Kolkata; State Department of fisheries and Rotary Club, Bhubaneswar organized a River Ranching Programme in the Mahanadi River today.

The ICAR-CIFA, Bhubaneswar, Odisha is involved in the research and development of different Minor Carps Species over the past 20 years. The Endemic fisheries resources of the river Mahanadi have been depleted due to the severe anthropogenic pressure, fish ranching can aid in the revival and enhancement of the native fish population in such river systems. In this regard, both the Institutes have jointly planned for the Seed Ranching Programme.

Following this, about 50,000 Seeds Minor Carps L. fimbriatus, S. sarana, L. calbasu were released in the Mahanadi river.

Dr. Saroj Kumar Swain, Director, ICAR-CIFA, Bhubaneswar, Odisha; Dr. Basant Kumar Das, Director ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore, Kolkata; along with the other scientists from both the Institutes and Shri Pratap Rout, Joint Director, Department of Fisheries, Government of Odisha were present during the programme.
