The World Fisheries Day is celebrated on 21st November throughout the world. This year, the Day was celebrated on the theme “Social Responsibility in the fisheries value chain” to look at the sustainability factors of the fisheries, fishing industries and also the surrounding sphere which balances the ecosystem. The fishing communities organize a wide array of different colorful activities like rallies, workshops, public meetings, cultural programmes, dramas, exhibitions, etc., to mark the celebration of the day.
The ICAR Institutes pan India also celebrated the World Fisheries Day - 2020 with full zeal and fervor.
ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore, Kolkata
The Institute organized the “Field Day” at Chamta Wetland, Bongaon, West Bengal for creating awareness among the Beel Dependent Communities regarding the importance of climate resilient Beel Fisheries Management on the occasion of the World Fisheries Day.
Dr. B.K Das, Director of the Institute inaugurated the programme by stocking the fingerlings in pens installed in Chamta Wetland. Dr. Das stressed that hearing the voices from the field and addressing the Inland Fisheries issues will help to combat hunger and malnutrition of the poorest of the poor of the country.
The programme was aimed at empowering the rural youths through climate resilient small-scale Beel Fisheries Management by rebuilding viable livelihood opportunities in the post COVID-19 era.
More than 250 fishers from Kholsi Beel, Beledanga Beel, Chamardaha Beel and Panchita Beel also participated in the event.
ICAR-Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture, Chennai
The Institute celebrated the World Fisheries Day - 2020 at its Muttukadu Experimental Station, Chennai with the fish farmers and farm women.
Dr. K.K. Vijayan, Director of the Institute complimented the fish farmers for successfully involving in their aquaculture activities and generating income after ICAR-CIBA’s interventions. He outlined about the felicitation of ICAR-CIBA’s mentored Nambikkainagar Fisher Self-Help Group, Chennai and Sai Aqua Feeds from Bapatla, Andhra Pradesh by the National Awards from the Ministry of Fisheries, Government of India during the World fisheries Day - 2020 celebrations at New Delhi.
Around 30 fisher folks from the coastal villages of Chengalpattu District, Tamil Nadu participated and shared their success stories on Seabass (Lates calcarifer) nursery rearing, Mudcrab (Scylla serratta), Pearlspot (Etroplus suretensis), Milkfish (Chanos chanos) and Ornamental fish farming during the occasion.
