The ICAR-Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture, Chennai organized the Training Programme-cum-Workshop on “Biofloc-based High Density Nursery and Grow-out Farming of Shrimp / Fish for Eco-based Aquaculture” for the Scheduled Caste / Scheduled Tribe Farmer Groups at its Kovalam Experimental Station (KES) today.

Dr. T. Ravisankar, Principal Scientist, ICVAR-CIBA, Chennai underlined the social and economic security that the biofloc-based shrimp culture activity can provide to the farmers.
Dr. Akshaya Panigrahi, Principal Scientist, ICAR-CIBA & Team Leader of the Programme briefed about the novel technology that can help to contain the nitrogenous metabolites by converting to bacterial biomass, thus, improving feed conversion, reducing cost of production while reducing the risk of disease.
The trainees were provided with the hands-on-training for preparing and maintaining the biofloc, water quality analysis, seed stocking & sampling, acclimatization & stocking of seeds, feeding & measurement of biofloc with the help of Imhoff Cone, biofloc-based microbial consortium “CIBAFLOC” developed by the ICAR-CIBA for the floc generation and water quality management in the biofloc shrimp / fish multi-phased nursery-cum-grow-out systems.
About 70 beneficiaries were trained under the Schedule Caste Sub Plan Scheme to develop the skills on shrimp nursery / grow-out rearing technology developed by the Institute.
