Five days training programme on Invasive Weed Management

The ICAR-Directorate of Weed Research, Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh in collaboration with ICFRE, Dehradun organized 5 days training programme on “Invasive Weed Management”. The programme was inaugurated by Dr. J.S. Mishra, Director and in his inaugural address, he highlighted the importance of different weeds, their problems and effect on forest ecology and plant biodiversity. He also emphasized on challenges related to control and management of alien weeds like Parthenium hysterophorus, Lantana camara, Mikania micrantha, Chromolaena odorata, and water weed like Eichhornia crassipes. Dr. Sushil Kumar, Pr. Scientist, Entomology addressed on problematic weeds which destroy the forest ecology and alters biodiversity. He also discussed weed management practices i.e. chemical and biological.

The training programme included 15 ICFRE scientists from different forest research institutes of the country. In this training altogether 18 deliberations were scheduled with eminent weed scientists from ICAR-DWR, Jabalpur. Weed scientists delivered comprehensive lectures designed especially on invasive weeds, their characteristics, menace and management under forest ecosystem. Dr. J C Tiwari, resource person form ICAR-CAZRI also shared his expertise on the same through online lecture. During the training programme, a field visit was arranged for demonstration of ongoing experiments on weed management.

During the closing ceremony Director, ICAR-DWR, Jabalpur addressing the scientists explained the importance, problems, utilization, and management of invasive weeds under changing climate in different forest ecosystems i.e. tropical, sub-tropical, humid, per-humid and temperate.  He suggested the timely management of the weeds for their optimum control. At the end, certificates were distributed to the trainees and formal vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. V.K. Choudhary.
