ICAR-CIBA in collaboration with the Fishworkers Welfare Federation of India, established a Zero-waste fish market model at Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra

ICAR-Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture, Chennai signed a Memorandum of understanding with the  Fishworkers Welfare Federation of India, (‘FISHFED, India’), Navi Mumbai on 27th September 2022 for transferring the CIBA-PlanktonPlua s production technology on non-exclusive basis. CIBA-Plankton Plus is a value-added product developed from fish waste/trimmings using a unique technology that helps in maintaining a healthy phytoplankton and zooplankton bloom during the shrimp and fish culture period and also reduces the requirement of formulated feed for shrimp and fish without affecting growth and production performance.

The fish waste processing unit has been set up at the Diwale Gaon fish market, Belapur, Navi Mumbai convert the market into a zero waste model fish market under Swachh Bharat initiative.

A team of scientists, from ICAR-CIBA provided hands-on training and demonstrated PlanktonPlus production technology to the Fish-workers of ‘FISHFED, India’ from 6th to 9th February 2023 at Diwale Gaon fish market.

Dr. Debasis De, Principal Scientist, CIBA, and team leader of this technology briefly explained the importance of this unit to make the CIBA-Plankton Plus available for the farmers of the West coast and expressed that this is a good model of a clean fish market across the country.

The CIBA scientists demonstrated the protocol for processing fish wastes to value-added products. Their usage in commercial aquaculture and agriculture & their marketing potential was also explained.

Shri Jaideep Patil, President, ‘FISHFED, India’ said that another two units will be established at Thane and Mumbai fish markets shortly with the support of ICAR-CIBA for promoting zerowaste fish market model as well as for the livelihood upliftment of Fish-workers of ‘FISHFED, India’.

Thus PlanktonPlus technology of ICAR-CIBA helps to promote zero waste fish market, to uplift the livelihood status of fisher folk, and helps to make a stride towards Swachh Bharat Mission.
