North East Sustainability Conclave on Productivity and Green Growth Held in Nagaland to Promote Sustainable Economic Development

North East Sustainability Conclave on Productivity and Green Growth to Advance Sustainable Development was jointly organized by NPC, DPIIT, MoC&I, GoI, and ICAR- National Research Centre On Mithun, Nagaland here today. This conclave was aimed to foster sustainable economic development in the Northeast region of India. By convening representatives from the government, private sector, academia, and progressive farmers, the event provided a platform to deliberate and share insights on strategies and ideas to achieve sustainable growth in the region.

Shri Sundeep K Nayak, IAS, Director General, National Productivity Council was the Chief Guest during the occasion. While delivering the keynote address he stated that NPC is spearheading the green growth moment in the country which provides technical assistance for the promotion of green growth. He stated that we need to have a net zero state action plan that includes mitigation or adoption measures aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and carbon neutral activities has to be carried out. He emphasized the role of the private sector in achieving sustainability and the need for green finance or green bond to support environmentally sustainable projects or businesses.

Dr. B N Tripathi, Deputy Director General (Animal Science) in his inaugural address stated climate change is an important issue to address and that the goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions should be achieved globally by the year 2070. Nagaland is known for its diverse indigenous communities and rich biodiversity. Organic and natural farming practices are gaining popularity in Nagaland as a means of promoting sustainable agriculture and preserving the environment, he added.

Dr. D. N. Thakur, National President, Sahakar Bharati, emphasized proper food storage for its availability during the lean season. He stated that there is about 40% of food waste before reaching consumers, so measures have to be taken to mitigate food waste. He urged the farmers to form cooperatives and focus more on the use of biogas to reduce the use of fossil fuels.

Dr. K. M. Bujarbaruah, Former Deputy Director General (Animal Science) and Former Vice Chancellor, AAU, Jorhat, delivered a lecture on crop and livestock-based natural farming with special reference to North East India.

Dr. S. Venugopal, Director, National Institute of Technology, Nagaland highlighted the importance of green manufacturing in Northeast India. Dr Nazrul Haque, Principal Scientist delivered lecture on organic agriculture in north east India.

Dr. Girish Patil S., Director of ICAR-NRCM, highlighted the role of Mithun in Natural farming. Mr. K. D. Bhardwaj, Director, Environment and Climate Change, NPC.  Dr T. K. Dutta, Director, ICAR-CIRB, Hisar, Haryana, Deans and Professors from SASARD, Medziphema, Veterinary College, Jalukie, Patkai Christian College, Chumukdeima, SET, Dimapur, students also participated in the event.
