Workshop on “Horticulture Development for Sub-Himalayan Terai Region” and “Kisan Mela -2016”

A Workshop on “Horticulture Development for Sub-Himalayan Terai Region” and “Kisan Mela -2016” was organized by ICAR-Central Plantation Crops Research Institute, Kasargod at Research Centre, Mohitnagar, Jalpaiguri, West Bengal during October 20-21, 2016 as part of the celebrations of 100 years of coconut research.

Shri Khageswar Roy, Member of Legislative Assembly, Rajganj in his inaugural address complimented the research achievements made by ICAR-CPCRI to make coconut and arecanut sector more vibrant during the 100 years of research.

Dr. Chirantan Chattopadhyay, Vice Chancellor, Uttar Banga Krishi Viswavidyalaya, in his keynote address, urged the farmers to understand climatic change impact over North Bengal and encouraged them to adopt the scientific cropping systems.

Dr. D. R. Singh, Director, ICAR-NRC on Orchid emphasized on the scope and opportunities of orchid cultivation and various vegetables along with plantation crops in Sub-Himalayan Terai regions.

Dr. P. Chowdappa, Director, ICAR-CPCRI, Kasaragod, in his welcome address highlighted the adoption of coconut based mixed farming system to accelerate the economic growth of North Bengal region and introduced the value added products of coconuts developed by ICAR-CPCRI.  He stressed that coconut/ arecanut based cropping system and value addition can enhance the profitability of farmers.

More than 650 farmers and officials from developmental departments attended the meeting.
