ICAR-Indian Institute of Soil and Water Conservation, Dehradun organised a Fish framers training on fisheries technologies and opportunities in Uttarakhand from 5th-9th March 2024. The Directorate of Uttarakhand State Fisheries Department, Dehradun, sponsored the third batch of a training programme under the Scheduled Caste Sub-Plan scheme.
Dr. M Madhu, Director, ICAR-IISWC, urged the farmer trainees to implement the techniques and knowledge gained during various facets of the course. He emphasized the importance of farm cooperatives and farmers' societies for improved coordination and interaction among communities, groups, and governmental and development agencies.
Dr. M Muruganandam, Principal Scientist and Head (PME & KM) Unit, ICAR-IISWC & course coordinator, stated that the training facilitated a synergy between the Uttarakhand State Fisheries Department and farming communities, enhancing research translation and knowledge management for resource management and production potential.

Shri. Anil Kumar, Deputy Director, State Fisheries Department, and Dr. Bipin Vishwakarma, Sr Fisheries Inspector, State Fisheries Department and other officials were also present in the meeting.
Farmers visited the Fish Farm and Dakhrani fish hatchery for better understanding, while research-based models and drone use in agriculture were explained at Selakui Research farm. The Farmers also engaged with multidisciplinary scientists to learn about farming problems and solutions, including integrated farming, trout farming, Pangasius farming, murrel farming, composite carp farming, and advanced technologies like recirculatory fish farming systems and Biofloc framing systems.
The trainees at the feedback session shared their knowledge of fish farming, advanced farming technologies, and the 5-day training program. They expressed interest in sharing this knowledge with fellow farmers and establishing a long-term connection with the Institute and scientists to improve their farming efforts and production.
A total of 47 fish farmer trainees including 26 youths from seven far-flung districts of Uttarakhand including Pithoragarh and Udam Singh Nagar benefitted from the training program.
