ICAR-CIFRI Celebrates 78th Foundation Day

ICAR- Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore commemorated its 78th Foundation Day, at its headquarters in Barrackpore, today. The institute has introduced various groundbreaking technologies such as induced breeding, composite fish culture, fisheries management guidelines, conservation efforts for riverine fish species, enclosure culture, mega river ranching programs, and the development and commercialization of products, promoting next-generation technologies.

The Chief Guest Dr. B. Meenakumari, Former Deputy Director General (Fishery Science) ICAR, emphasised the institute's pivotal role in shaping the fisheries sector since its inception. She stated that the progress of science can contribute immensely to the growth of the nation.

Prof. Gautam Saha, Vice-Chancellor, Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Nadia, acknowledged ICAR-CIFRI for its longstanding support in fostering the growth of the fisheries sector in India and applauded its efforts in assisting fishers and farmers to double their income.

Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, highlighted the institute's 77-year achievements in enhancing fisheries, conserving biodiversity, empowering stakeholders, and integrating advanced technologies like drones and sensor-based systems. He emphasised the significance of ICAR-CIFRI's efforts to align with Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on zero hunger, nutrition security, and gender equality, and detailed their initiatives in fisheries development and wetlands conservation.

Dr. B. P. Mohanty, Assistant Director General, Inland Fisheries, ICAR expressed his privilege in serving the institute for 25 years and extended his best wishes,

Dr. Madan Mohan, Former Assistant General, Marine Fisheries, ICAR, highlighted the institute's revolutionary technologies like induced breeding and composite fish culture that have transformed the fisheries sector in the country.

Dr. Pradip Dey, Director ICAR-ATARI, and Dr. A. K. Singh, Former Director of ICAR-DCFR, were present as Guests of Honor.

The event celebrated the release of two publications, 'Indian Major Carps: Conservation Plans and Fish Spawn Prospecting in River Ganga" and a Hindi training manual, 'Bihar Rajya mein Antarsthaliya Matsyiki Prabandhan'.

The celebration was attended by the fish farmers, students, and staff members of ICAR-CIFRI.
