Mithun Mela-cum-Farmers’ Scientists Interaction Organised

ICAR-National Research Centre on Mithun (ICAR-NRCM), Medziphema, Nagaland, in collaboration with the ICAR-National Institute of Biotic Stress Management (NIBSM), Raipur, and the Department of Animal Husbandry, Veterinary & Dairy Development (AHVDD), Government of Arunachal Pradesh, successfully organized the Mithun Mela-cum-Farmers’ Scientists Interaction and Technology Injection Program for Scientific Mithun Husbandry at Upper Jumi village in Kimin Circle, Papum Pare District.

The day-long event began with a Mithun vaccination and health camp, followed by the inauguration ceremony and a visit to the ICAR-NRCM exhibition stall showcasing recent technological advancements in Mithun husbandry. Essential inputs and resources were distributed to Mithun farmers as part of the outreach initiative aimed at promoting scientific practices in Mithun rearing.

Dr. Taram Takio, District Veterinary Officer, Papum Pare, delivered the welcome address. The occasion was marked by vibrant traditional songs and dances that highlighted the rich cultural heritage of Arunachal Pradesh.

Dr. Girish Patil S., Director, ICAR-NRCM, presented the institute’s ongoing initiatives and achievements in Mithun research and development. Dr. Danjan Longri, Director of Animal Husbandry, Veterinary & Dairy Development, Government of Arunachal Pradesh, spoke on the department’s efforts to promote and support Mithun farming across the state.

Distinguished guests included Smt. Bamang Yayu, ZPM-III, Kimin; Dr. A.K. Tyagi, ADG (ANP), ICAR Headquarters; Prof. (Dr.) M.R. Saseendranath, Chairman, RAC, ICAR-NRCM; and Shri Nabam Vivek, HMLA, 14th Doimukh Assembly Constituency. All dignitaries emphasized the importance of sustainable Mithun farming practices and the need for farmer-centric research and extension services.

The afternoon session featured a series of technical presentations by leading experts covering topics such as Mithun health management, nutrition, breeding practices, parasite control, and strategies for enhancing farm income. Notable speakers included Dr. S. Pan, Dr. A.K. Sangwan, Dr. Nazrul Haque, Dr. Reena Arora, and Dr. R.B. Sharma.

The event concluded with an interactive session between farmers and scientists. Progressive farmer Mr. Sambu Siongju shared his experiences, highlighting both challenges and opportunities in Mithun production.
