A 2-day farmers' awareness programme on the production techniques and commercialization of scented rice in West Bengal was successfully organised by the extended campus Uttar Banga Krishi Vishwavidyalaya (UBKV), Majhian with funding from Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) initiative. The event aimed to educate farmers on the importance of Geographical Indications (GI) and the best practices for cultivating high-value scented rice varieties.

The Chief Guest Dr Pradip Dey emphasized the rich legacy of Tulaipanji and Kalonunia, two renowned scented rice varieties of West Bengal. He highlighted how their distinct aroma and heritage are now safeguarded by the prestigious recognition. Dr Dey envisioned a future where farmers, as guardians of this legacy, benefit from increased economic rewards. The GI tag, he added, would expand their market reach, ensuring their produce stands out in both authenticity and value. With this distinction, these aromatic grains not only preserve tradition but also open new commercial opportunities, fostering prosperity for farming communities.

Dr P.K. Pal, Director, Extension Education, Uttar Banga Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, highlighted the broader importance of GI tags in agricultural branding and economic upliftment.

A total of more than 100 farmers participated in the programme, gaining valuable knowledge on scientific cultivation, branding, and market opportunities for scented rice. The initiative successfully bridged the gap between research and practical application, empowering farmers with essential skills for better productivity and commercial success.
