28th February 2025, Kolkata
ICAR-National Bureau of Soil Survey & Land Use Planning (NBSS&LUP), Regional Centre, Kolkata, organized four Watershed-Level Farmers’ Outreach Programs in Odisha, focusing on Training of Trainers for Land Resource Inventory (LRI) Cards. The sessions took place in the Jeypore and Boriguma blocks of Koraput from February 12-13, 2025, and in the Rairakhol and Kuchinda blocks of Sambalpur from February 26-27, 2025.
ICAR-NBSS&LUP has generated 1.49 lakh LRI Cards, which were distributed to farmers in selected watershed pilot clusters of Sambalpur and Koraput districts by the Directorate of Soil Conservation & Watershed Development (DSC&WD), Government of Odisha.
The programme identified common deficiencies in Zinc, Boron, and Sulphur in the watershed areas. Extension Managers were encouraged to promote pulses (red gram, black gram, and green gram) with micro-irrigation during the rabi season, and ragi, small millets, groundnut, and maize in the kharif season for upland areas. For low-lying areas, integrated paddy fishery with small backyard livestock was recommended. Mango, jackfruit, blackberry, and cashew were suggested for well-drained orchards in plains and uplands.
The event received positive feedback from farmers, SHGs, FPOs, and Extension Managers, and follow-up actions have already been initiated by DSC&WD, Govt. of Odisha.
The programmes engaged 95 farmers, four women self-help groups, four farmers' producer organizations (FPOs), and 55 Extension Managers from Nabarangpur, Sundergarh, Sambalpur, and Koraput districts. Participants were trained to implement agricultural land use plans based on the LRI Card approach.
The program was coordinated by Dr S. Bandyopadhyay, Principal Scientist and PI of the World Bank-funded REWARD Odisha Project, with co-coordination by Shri A.K. Maitra, Senior Technical Officer.
