A 2-day mega Awareness-cum-Input Distribution Program on Plant Genetic Resource Conservation for Improved Nutritional and Livelihood Security of Farmers was successfully organized jointly by the ICAR-NBPGR, New Delhi and WBCADC Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) under the jurisdiction of ICAR-Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute (ATARI), Kolkata. The programme targeted beneficiaries from the Scheduled Caste (SC) community under the Scheduled Caste Sub Plan (SCSP) initiative, aimed at sensitizing farmers on the importance of conserving plant genetic resources and improving nutritional and livelihood programme.
Dr Pradip Dey, Director, ICAR-ATARI, Kolkata, addressed the farmers virtually, emphasizing the importance of using high-quality newly introduced seeds. He highlighted that adopting superior seeds is not only crucial for enhancing productivity but also for ensuring its sustainability in the years to come. Dr. Dey underscored the crucial role of the SCSP programme in bridging gaps and empowering marginalized farmers.
Shri Susanta Kumar Mahapatra, former Joint Director, Bankura, Government of West Bengal spoke about conservation measures of Government.
Dr D.R. Pani, Officer-In-Charge, ICAR-NBPGR Regional station, Cuttack, Odisha narrated the importance of plant genetic resources in providing nutritional security.
Dr Smita Lenka, Chief Technical Officer, ICAR-NBPGR New Delhi actively participated in the event.
Experts emphasized the role of diverse plant genetic resources in enhancing crop resilience, nutritional security, and sustainable livelihoods. Farmers received valuable inputs, including improved seed varieties, along with hands-on guidance on conservation practices.
A total of 200 beneficiaries actively participated in the programme, gaining scientific knowledge and practical skills to enhance their expertise, along with access to various inputs and implements. This initiative is a step forward in empowering marginalized farming communities with scientific knowledge and resources, promoting sustainable agriculture while ensuring food and nutritional security through conservation of plant genetic resources.
