Training on improved citrus production technology for the North-eastern Hill Region

ICAR-Central Citrus Research Institute organized a 3-day training programme on improved citrus production technology for the North-eastern Hill Region” for the citrus growers from North-east India from 3-7 March 2025, in Nagpur, Maharashtra. 

The inaugural function was graced by Dr S. N. Puri, Former Vice-Chancellor, Central Agricultural University, Imphal, as the Chief Guest, and Dr Dilip Ghosh, Director, ICAR-CCRI, as the President of the event.

Dr Puri highlighted the citrus value chain in the North-eastern hill region and discussed the challenges and strategies required to revive the citrus sector. He underscored the significance of using disease-free quality planting materials and the potential of farm-gate processing to enhance farmers' income.

Addressing the gathering, Dr Ghosh emphasized the crucial role of citrus in India’s horticultural landscape, particularly in the North-eastern region. He spoke about the ongoing research and outreach activities of ICAR-CCRI in the region and urged the participants to adopt improved technologies in their orchards while disseminating their learnings to fellow farmers for wider benefits. 

The training programme featured a combination of theoretical sessions and hands-on practical training, covering various aspects of citrus production, from nursery management to post-harvest technology. Participants also visited ICAR-CCRI’s citrus nurseries and research farms, gaining insights into advanced citrus cultivation practices. 

Additionally, an exposure visit to citrus orchards of progressive farmers was arranged to provide real-world learning experiences. The initiative aimed to equip them with the necessary knowledge and skills to enhance citrus production and productivity in the North-eastern hill region. The training concluded successfully with positive feedback from participants, who expressed appreciation for the comprehensive training modules and practical exposure. 

ICAR-CCRI reaffirmed its commitment to supporting citrus growers in North-east India through research, training, and extension activities, ensuring the sustainable development of the citrus industry in the region.

A total of 44 participants, including farmers and state government officers from Manipur and Meghalaya, attended the training programme.
