A five-day hands-on training programme on “Soil and Water Health in Brackishwater Aquaculture” was conducted ICAR - Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture (CIBA), Chennai during 20 - 24 June 2017, with a view to develop the skills on improving the health of soil and water for sustainable brackishwater aquaculture.
The objective of the programme was to imbibe the scientific knowledge among the participants on the importance of proper understanding on the farm environment, especially the soil and water quality management issues and solutions in brackishwater aquaculture, starting from pond preparation up to harvest, to support the farmers, for achieving optimum productivity and post-harvest environmental management.
The programme was attended by 21 participants comprising of farmers, technicians, academicians, students and entrepreneurs interested in brackishwater aquaculture, from Odisha, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
The participants had interaction with scientists on suitability of soil and water for brackishwater aquaculture, better management practices for the maintenance of parameters within the optimum range, biosecurity and quarantine measures for prevention of diseases, discharge water management, environmental impact assessment and carrying capacity of source waters, and hands on training on protocols for sampling and analysis of soil and water samples.
In the valedictory function held on 24thJune, 2017, Dr.K.K.Vijayan, Director of the institute urged the participants to utilize the techniques learned during the training programme for the environmentally safe brackishwater aquaculture development and practice.
