Awareness Programme on conserving depleting fish species of River Ganga

Awareness Programme on Conserving Depleting fish species of River Ganga was organised by ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute,  Regional Centre, Allahabad on 1st August 2017 under National Mission for Clean Ganga project to restore and conserve the depleting fish species.

Shri Jai Prakash Nishad, Minister of State, Animal Husbandry and Fishery, Government of Uttar Pradesh inaugurated the programme with lighting of the lamp. In his address , the Minister emphasised on the importance of Ganga River and its biodiversity. He expressed great concern on low recruitment of fishes, over fishing of brooder stock during the breeding season and over fishing of the fingerling during rainy season which hampers the fish biodiversity and finally affecting the livelihood of fishermen community. He also released publication “Ganga Ko Aviral Bahne Do” as a guiding principle to restore Ganga and livelihood of fishermen community.  As part of ranching programme fingerlings of Rohu, Catla and Mrigal species were released by Shri Nishad.

Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI briefed stressed that ranching of all the important depleting fish species is scheduled to be done in the entire stretch of the Ganga River.

On this occasions, Professor, Scientists and officials from Allahabad University, WII, FRI, Forest Department, Uttrar Pradesh, Fisheries Department Uttrar Pradesh, Ganga Vichar Manch, NGOs were present and expressed their opinion. They suggested measures to reduce pollution and to increase the fishes in the river.

The event was attended by the students of Allahabad university, fishers of nearby villages, fish traders of Sadiapur, Daraganj & Mehdauri  and local people living on the bank of the Ganga and Yamuna.
