ICAR-NRC on Mithun Organizes Interface Meeting with the Veterinary officials of Nagaland State

nrcmithun-01-20032017ICAR-National Research Centre on Mithun, Medziphema, Nagaland, under Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP), organized an Interface meeting with the officers of Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary, Govt of Nagaland State in Kohima on 7 March 2017 to popularize mithun rearing under changing climatic scenario and to discuss the Present status and future scope of mithun rearing in Nagaland.

Sri M. K. Mero, Commissioner & Secretary, Dept. of A.H. and Vety., Govt of Nagaland, Chief Guest of the Interface Meeting, informed the house about the various schemes namely Gokul Mission for mithun rearing in the State. He further suggested that mithun rearing scheme can be included under Entrepreneur Development and Employment Generation (EDEG) program of National Livelihood Mission (NLM), Govt of India.

Dr. I. P. Khala, Director, Vety. and AH, Govt of Nagaland expressed his sincere thanks to ICAR-NRCM for organizing this important Interface meeting entitled “Present status and future scope of mithun rearing in Nagaland State”.

Dr. Abhijit Mitra, Director, ICAR-NRCM, while emphasizing the importance of such Interface meeting with the stakeholders, stressed the need to create the awareness for conserving the best community mithun bulls for breeding purpose and not to slaughter such precious male animals for the feast.

An Open House Discussion was held to deliberate on various issues related to mithun rearing, viz. management of diseases, registration of mithun as food animals, and studying carrying capacity of the forest. The House agreed that semi-intensive system of mithun rearing should be replicated in the farmer's field for better economic return.

75 Senior Veterinary Officers from different districts of Nagaland and Scientists of ICAR-NRCM, Nagaland participated in this Interface Meeting.
