National Consultation Meet on ‘Mariculture and Open Sea Cage Culture Development in India’

A two-day National Consultation Meet on ‘Mariculture and Open Sea Cage Culture Development in India’ was organized by the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) in collaboration with the Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries (DADF), Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare and National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) at Mandapam Regional Centre of ICAR- CMFRI on 8th - 9th June 2017.

Shri Devendra Chaudhry, I.A.S., Secretary, DADF inaugurated the consultation meet. He directed ICAR-CMFRI to prepare an action plan to achieve 4 lakh tonnes of marine finfish production within five years in different locations of maritime States through mariculture. He also suggested the institute to circulate the draft mariculture policy to all maritime States.

Shri Aditya Kumar Joshi, I.F.S., Joint Secretary, DADF suggested the maritime States to submit proposal for financial assistance from the Centre for setting up of hatcheries, nurseries and cage farms in their respective states.

The consultative meet discussed various issues in mariculture and open sea cage culture; policy aspects; leasing policy; and status of breeding, nursery and rearing technology for species used in mariculture etc.

Shri Gagandeep Singh Bedi, Principal Secretary to Govt. of Tamil Nadu, Shri.V.P.Thandapani, Director of Fisheries, Tamil Nadu, Shri.G.S.Sameeran, Additional Director of Fisheries, Ramanathapuram, Shri.S. Natarajan, District Collector, Ramanathapuram, Shri. Ram Sankar Naik, Commissioner of Fisheries, Govt. of Andhra Pradesh, Dr Pravin Puthran, ADG (M.Fy.), ICAR were among the panellists.

Scientists from various research institutes viz., ICAR-CMFRI, CSIR-CSMCRI, ICAR-CIBA, NIOT, RGCA and AFI presented technical papers at the consultation meet which assumes significance in the wake of call for blue revolution by boosting mariculture to increase marine fish production.
