The ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore, Kolkata in collaboration with the Inland Fisheries Society of India and Professional Fisheries Graduate Forum (PFGF), Mumbai, Maharashtra has organized the Indian Fisheries Outlook - 2022 “Priming Indian Fisheries in Attaining Sustainable Development Goals” Conference from 22nd to 24th March, 2022.

Delivering the inaugural address, Shri Bankim Chandra Hazra, Minister of Sundarban Affairs and Development, Government of West Bengal highlighted the important role played by the Fisheries Sector in the economic development of West Bengal and India.
The Chief Guest, Dr. Joykrushna Jena, Deputy Director General (Fisheries Science), ICAR emphasized on the fisheries sector’s importance in the Indian agricultural and rural economy. He highlighted the SDG Goals for fisheries and aquaculture sector. Dr. Jena underlined more than 65% contribution of the Inland Fisheries and Aquaculture in the fisheries basket of the country.
The Guest of Honor, Swami Suparnanada Maharaj, Honorary Secretary, Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture, Kolkata delivered the 4th P.C. Thomas Lecture on “Civilization, Culture, Science and Religion”. In his lecture, the various thoughts of civilizations, science and religion were discussed. He also emphasized that the Science and Culture are the two shades, while Science and Religion are the two opposite poles.
The Guest of Honor, Dr. Riji John, Vice-Chancellor, Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS), Kochi, Kerala underlined the fisheries sector’s importance in the country. He stressed that Fish is now not only recognized as a cheap protein but, also as healthier food.
Dr. B.B. Nayak, General Secretary, PFGF, Mumbai briefed about the Conference’s Theme and its main objective.
Earlier, welcoming the dignitaries, Dr. B.K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore & President, PFGF, Mumbai stressed that this conference will deal with the important fisheries and aquaculture related topics.
More than 500 Researchers, Academicians, Scientists, Students, Representatives of Industries and 100 Farmers of West Bengal participated in the Conference.
