ICAR-Central Institute of Temperate Horticulture, Srinagar in collaboration with ICAR-CPRI, Shimla, ICAR-IIVR, Varanasi, ICAR-IIHR, Banglore, ICAR-CAZRI RS Leh and HMAARI, SKUAST-K, Leh organied two days workshop on “Development of horticulture under cold arid region of Ladakh for enhancing quality production and improving livelihood” at SKUAST-K Campus Leh from 23rd to 24th August, 2017. The workshop was attended by around 135 participants including farmers from different areas of Ladakh, officers from line departments and scientists from ICAR and SKUAST Kashmir. Honble Executive Councillor (Agriculture) Sh. Tsering Wangdus was the chief guest on the occasion.
On the onset of the workshop, Dr. D.B.Singh, Director ICAR-CITH, Srinagar welcomed the chief guest, and other dignitaries on the dice, speakers from all over the country and all the other participants. In his welcome address Dr. Singh briefed the house about the working of ICAR-CITH and showed his concern in elevating the socio-economic status of farming community of Ladakh region. He promised to conduct more such workshops for extending technologies developed by ICAR-CITH, suiting the arid region, in near future.
In his address, the chief guest, Sh. Wangdus thanked ICAR-CITH for organizing the said workshop for farming community of Ladakh region. He showed his concern about the changing climatic scenario and stressed that cultivation of cash crops, pulses, double cropping and seed production should be encouraged in the region for the benefits of farmers of Ladakh. Mr. Wangdus told the house that some new and effective recommendations are expected to come out of this workshop.
During the technical sessions various issues related to horticulture were discussed. Farmers showed a lot of enthusiasm in learning new technologies during the workshop. Farmers appreciated the healthy interaction, in hindi, on the issues of their immediate concern.
