The ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore organized two-day workshop on “Metagenomics in Fisheries Research” from 1st to 2nd December - 2018. The workshop was jointly organized by Inland Fisheries Society of India, Barrackpore; ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore and ICAR-Indian Agricultural Statistical Research Institute, New Delhi.
The aim of the workshop was to cover the use of publicly available resources for the management, sharing, analyzing and interpreting NGS data in various fields of microbial community studies, viz., water, sediment and soil, gut and skin and antibiotic resistance microbiome.
Dr. George John, Former Vice Chancellor, Birsa Agriculture University, Ranchi marked his presence as the Chief Guest along with Dr. P.K. Agarwal, ADG, National Agricultural Science Fund, ICAR and Dr. Anil Rai, Head, Centre for Agricultural Bioinformatics, Indian Agricultural Statistics Research Institute as Guests of Honor.
Dr. B.K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI and Convenor of the workshop highlighted the challenges being faced by the researchers in the field.
Some potential uses of Metagenomics in the study of microbial diversity, microbial roles in microcosms, antibiotic resistance genes, novel and potential pathogens, microbial communities forming bioflocs, probiotics and other applications were also addressed during the workshop.
