Workshop to Improve Fish Production organised by ICAR-CIFRI at Agartala

The ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore, Kolkata organized an interactive workshop on “Management of Open-water Fisheries” at Agartala, Tripura from 4^th to 5^th January - 2019. The workshop was organized in collaboration with Directorate of Fisheries, Department of Fisheries, Government of Tripura.

In his inaugural address, the Chief Guest, Shri Narendra Chandra Debbarma, Minister of Fisheries, Government of Tripura outlined the habit of Tripura citizens being fish-eaters to be beneficial for the fisheries sector in the state. He also sought the intervention of CIFRI to improve fish production from natural water bodies to benefit the common people on a larger scale.

Shri G.R. Das, TCS, Director of Fisheries, Government of Tripura and Joint Convener of the workshop, in his welcome address, expressed his concerns with scientists from ICAR-CIFRI about the unavailability of small highly nutritious and delicious fisheries in inundated paddy fields of Tripura.

Dr. B.K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore and Convenor of the workshop stressed on focus to be given by the Department of Fisheries, Government of Tripura on seed production of diversified fish species having local preference. He also gave assurance of every necessary support in terms of technology backstopping for managing the oper water fisheries in the state.

The main objective of the workshop was to discuss and exchange the varied expert ideas and advises for improving the fisheries culture in Tripura. During the workshop, the major focus was on simple and low-cost technologies (such as pen and cage aquaculture) and guidelines (fish stock enhancement) that are to be popularized in Dumbur reservoir, large lakes, barrages, swampy areas and rivers of Tripura for improving fish production.

During the interactive-cum-plenary session, Shri Rameshwar Das, IFS, Secretary (Fisheries), Government of Tripura urged the scientists and departmental officials to seriously think out-of-box for making cage aquaculture practice in Tripura a success as is prevalent in other states of the country.

Scientists from ICAR Institutes, officers from fisheries college and state Govt. participated in the workshop.
