NAAS - Bhopal Chapter organizes Workshop on “Improving Soybean Yield in Central India-Potential Strategies”

The National Academy of Agricultural Sciences - Bhopal Chapter organized a one-day Workshop on “Improving Soybean Yield in Central India-Potential Strategies” at the Indian Institute of Soil Science, Bhopal today.

The Chief Guest, Dr. Anil K. Singh, Secretary, NAAS and Former Vice-Chancellor, Rajmata Vijay Raje Scindia Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya, Gwalior highlighted the policy implications of stagnation in soybean yield on the farm economy, soil health and overall economy of the country. He urged to adopt a holistic strategy involving the crop improvement, soil nutrient management and pest control methods for improving the soybean production in central India.

Dr. S.K. Rao, Vice-Chancellor, Rajmata Vijay Raje Scindia Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya, Gwalior stressed on the narrow genetic base of soybean in India. He accentuated that the enhancement of genetic pool of the crop would be one of the major options to improve the yield under the climate change conditions. Dr. Rao mentioned about 110 varieties of soybean having only 8-10 parents in the country.

Earlier, Dr. Ashok K. Patra, Director, ICAR-IISS & Convener, NAAS - Bhopal Chapter briefed about the objectives of the technical workshop.

The NAAS - Bhopal Chapter was formally launched on the occasion.

A brainstorming session was also held where the progressive farmers and the State Government officials put forth their views on current constraints and strategies for improved soybean production during the occasion.

The Fellows and Associates of the NAAS - Bhopal Chapter participated in the workshop.
