To contribute towards the vision of Mahatma Gandhi of keeping the surroundings neat and clean, the Government of India initiated the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
Observing the vision of the Mission, the ICAR Institutes pan India organized the Special National Swachhta Campaigns on the Theme - “Waste-to-Wealth”.
ICAR-Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute, Goa The Institute organized the Campaign at the R.C. Pai Raikar School of Agriculture, Savoi-verem to sensitize the Diploma Students and Farmers regarding the decomposition of agricultural waste and vermi-composting.
In his address, the Chief Guest, Dr. Parveen Kumar, Director, ICAR-CCARI, Goa highlighted the importance of cleanliness in day-to-day life and the small steps that can lead to make society and the country clean. Dr. Kumar also underlined about the Institute’s AGNI-Agri-Business Incubator Project to provide support to the Start-Ups for initial 6 Months to start their business.
Smt. Rupa Naik, Deputy Sarpanch, Savoi-verem opined that every waste if reused properly can turn into wealth.
ICAR-Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture, Chennai
The Institute organized a Sensitization Programme at Kasimedu Fishing Harbour, Chennai.
Dr. K.P. Jithendran, Director, ICAR-CIBA, Chennai inaugurated a Fish Waste-to-Wealth Production Unit “M/s. VS Fish Waste Hydrolysate Unit” owned by Smt. Velankanni, a Member of Nambikkai Fish Farmers’ Group, Srinivasapuram, Chennai. The Institute has transferred the technology for converting the “Fish Waste to value-added products - ICAR-CIBA Plankton Plus and Horti Plus” TO Smt. Velankanni.
ICAR-Central Soil Salinity Research Institute, Karnal, Haryana
The Institute organized the “Clean India Mission” Programme on theme “Waste-to-Wealth” among the school children of Government High School, Village Kalampura and Women Farmers from Budhanpur (Karnal) and Sikandar Khedi (Kaithal) to mark the occasion.
In his address, Dr. P.C. Sharma, Director, ICAR-CSSRI, Karnal emphasized on the importance of waste management and its role as crop input.
The participants were distributed with the dustbins for collecting solid and liquid waste materials for its further utilization at the local level.
ICAR-Indian Institute of Soil Science, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh
The Institute organized the Campaign at the Villages Khamkheda and Arvalia of Bhopal District.
In his address, the Chief Guest, Dr. Ashok K. Patra, Director, ICAR-IISS, Bhopal emphasized on the need of creating wealth from waste and the importance of organising such campaigns particularly in the rural areas.
The farmers were also provided with the Vermi-beds, Worm Mother Culture and Certificates for successfully completing the training on Vermi-composting under ASCI Skill India Programme during the occasion.
ICAR-National Institute of Natural Fibre & Engineering Technology, Kolkata
In his keynote address, the Chief Guest, Dr. S.C. Ray, Former Professor, DJFT, IJT, University of Kolkata urged the participants to identify themselves as the key persons to take responsibility of cleaning the surroundings in terms of minimized production of waste and maximum use of waste to convert it to resourceful wealth.
Earlier, in his inaugural address, Dr. D.B. Shakyawar, Director, ICAR-NINFET outlined the Institute’s contributions towards waste management and converting them into wealth. He also briefed the technologies developed by the Institute’s Scientists which is a step forward towards optimized waste management and creating of wealth.
ICAR-Directorate of Coldwater Fisheries Research, Bhimtal, Uttarakhand
The Directorate organized the Campaign in association with the Fisheries Department, Bhimtal and National Service Scheme (NSS), Ramgarh at Government Inter College, Talla Ramgarh, Nainital, Uttarakhand today.
In his address, Dr. Pramod Kumar Pandey, Director, ICAR-DCFR, Bhimtal stressed on the significance of converting the kitchen and farm waste into compost. Dr. Pandey also apprised about the methodology of vermi-composting.
A total of 200 participants including Students, Farmers, Members of Local Civic Bodies, Teachers, Scientists, Technical Staff and other Stakeholders participated in the programme.
