National Workshop on “Shiitake Mushroom” and “Interactive Mushroompreneurs Meet” organized

The three-day National Workshop on “Shiitake Mushroom: As Nutraceutical and Next Generation Functional Food” and “Mushroompreneurs Meet” organized by the ICAR-Research Complex for North-Eastern Hill Region, Manipur Centre from 22nd to 24th February, 2022 concluded today. The Workshop was organized in collaboration with the Society for Plant Biochemistry and Biotechnology (SPBB), New Delhi.

Inaugurating the Workshop, Dr. Anupam Mishra, Vice-Chancellor, Central Agricultural University, Imphal highlighted the importance of Mushroom in daily diet.

Dr. S.L. Mehta, Former Deputy Director General (Agricultural Education), ICAR & President, SPBB, New Delhi underlined the importance of Shiitake Mushroom in human health. The SPBB’s contribution in disseminating the science of biochemistry and biotechnology to the common man through the different events was also highlighted by Dr. Mehta.

Dr. V.P. Sharma, Director, ICAR-Directorate of Mushroom Research, Solan, Himachal Pradesh delivered the Plenary Talk on “The Status of Shiitake Mushroom Research in India”.

Dr. V.K. Mishra, Director, ICAR-Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam stated about the presence of Mushrooms in the very basic dietary habits of people in the North-East. He stressed on the need for exploring the diverse germplasm of Shiitake Mushroom from the region and developing the valuable products and brand promotion through the Farmers’ Producers’ Organizations.

Dr. Shelly Praveen, Former Head (Division of Biochemistry), ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi & Secretary, SPBB regarded the Shiitake Mushroom as a new emerging highly nutritious functional food having a lot of medicinal and nutraceutical properties.

The main objective of the Workshop was to provide information on the advances and innovation in Shiitake Mushroom Research, Mushroomprenuers Development and Hands-on-Training.

More than 600 Delegates from across the country participated in the National Workshop.
