The ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore, Kolkata organized a Workshop on “Strategic planning for nutritional security and productivity enhancement in Hirakud Reservoir: An approach to community mobilization” at Sambalpur, Odisha today.
The Workshop was organized in collaboration with the NGO (BANO Charitable Trust, Odisha) and State fisheries Department, Government of Odisha.
The Chief Guest, Shri S. Saxena, I.A.S., District Magistrate, Sambalpur, Odisha stressed on the potential of the Hirakud Reservoir and urged the local authorities to extend all the support for the development of the fishermen community of the Hirakud Reservoir.
Shri B.P. Dwivedy, Deputy Director Fisheries, Government of Odisha highlighted the Department’s commitment to work with the ICAR-CIFRI for Hirakud Reservoir production enhancement.
Dr. B.K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore, Kolkata highlighted the importance of the strategic scientific planning of the Hirakud Reservoir for the sustainable production to bridge the gap between present production and its potential. He also emphasized on the ICAR-CIFRI’s technologies namely ICAR-CIFRI GI Cage and ICAR-CIFRI Pen HDPE that will play an important role for producing the advanced fingerlings as a suitable stocking material to enhance the Reservoir’s production.
Earlier, in his welcome address, Dr. A. Rashid, Chairman, (BANO Charitable Trust, Odisha outlined the main objective of the workshop that was aimed at motivating the fishers on sustainable reservoir management and its scientific planning.
Around 120 fishermen from 6 Primary Fishermen Cooperative Societies participated in the workshop.
