A successful coordination between ICAR-ATARI, Kolkata and National Security Guard (NSG) under Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India and effective execution by Howrah Krishi Vigyan Kendra resulted successful organization of one day ‘Millet Mela’ at the campus in Action Area-III, Newtown, Kolkata today. It was organised to create awareness as a part of yearlong celebration of International Year of Millet 2023 about health and nutritional benefits of millets among serving personnel of NSG including family members.
The Mela was inaugurated by Colonel Anil Kumar, Group Commander of 29 Special Composite Group, NSG. In a message sent on the occasion, Dr. Pradip Dey, Director, ICAR-ATARI, Kolkata expressed his happiness for the successful collaboration and highlighted the importance of millets as climate resilient crop with low water foot-print and to combat various diseases like diabetes. Howrah KVK displayed various information on Millets about its nutritious value and production technologies through posters in their Stall. All the serving personnel of NSG along with their family members visited various stalls and tasted various food items prepared from Millets. Howrah KVK also prepared two dishes viz. Khichdi from Shyama (Barnyard millet) and Kheer from Kahon (Foxtail millet), which were widely appreciated by the visiting folks. Other important dishes like Sorghum Khichdi, Millet Tikka, Jowar ka Halwa was prepared by some serving personnel of NSG and distributed among the visitors.
Approximately 200 people gathered in the said Mela and the presence of Howrah KVK under ICAR-ATARI was highly appreciated by the Officials of NSG.
