ICAR-CIFA Signed MoU for improved Rohu (Jayanti) and improved Catla multiplier unit

ICAR- Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture has signed MoU with three entrepreneurs-cum-hatchery owners Mrs. Jhulekha Firoj Tamboli, Pune, Maharashtra, Mrs. Jhina Parida, Kendrapada, Odisha and Shri. Kumara Swamy, Guntur, Andhra Pradesh for being authorized multiplier units for dissemination of genetically improved AhR Jayanti and improved Catla developed through selective breeding by the institute. The MoU was signed today at ICAR-CIFA.

Dr. Kanta Das Mahapatra, Former Principal Scientist, FGBD was invited as Guest of Honour. She talked about the history of the selective breeding program at ICAR-CIFA. Dr. Mahapatra said that along with dissemination maintaining the purity of genetically improved varieties is also important for sustainable production and for this, the multiplier units and ICAR-CIFA should work cohesively.

Shri. Vijay Shikhare, Regional Deputy Commissioner, Fisheries, Department of Fisheries, Maharashtra as Special Guest for the MoU signing ceremony. He shared his experience of a long collaboration with ICAR-CIFA since 2017 and the benefits of using CIFA technologies such as Jayanti Rohu, a portable FRP carp hatchery for the farmers of Maharashtra. Shri. Shikhare also assured the monitoring of the quality of seed produced at multiplier hatcheries of Maharashtra as per the MoU terms and conditions.

Dr. P. K. Sahoo, Director, ICAR-CIFA, said that the institute has played a crucial role in freshwater aquaculture development in the country by developing different technologies for aquaculture farmers. The AhR Jayanti Rohu and improved Catla if disseminated widely can play a major role in doubling the farmer’s production and income. Dr. Sahoo conveyed his views on signing more MoUs in the future for the effective dissemination of improved varieties developed by ICAR-CIFA.

Dr. J. K. Sudaray, Head, Fish Genetics and Biotechnology, welcomed all the dignitaries on the dias and hatchery owners for the MoU signing ceremony. He said that the multiplier units are the brand ambassadors of the CIFA for wider dissemination of the AhR Jayanti Rohu and improved Catla across the country.

All the hatchery owners shared their experiences about the success of Jayanti Rohu and improved Catla in their farm and also told about their expectations from ICAR-CIFA. They said that the performance of Jayanti Rohu and improved Catla is always better than the local stock available.
