ICAR-National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources (NBFGR), Lucknow, celebrated ‘World Environment Day’ today with the theme ‘Solutions to plastic pollution’.
On the occasion, around 220 saplings of ornamental, medicinal and fruit plants were planted by the staff members on the campus.
Dr. U. K. Sarkar, Director, ICAR-NBFGR said that this plantation drive will increase each and every staff member’s bonding with nature and also improve the aesthesis and improve the environment of the Institute. He also urged the entire staff to take the initiatives to keep the campus plastic free on this occasion.
Col. S. Sinha Deputy Commander No.1, Technical Training Wing, Army Medical Corps and College, Lucknow delivered a lecture on “World Environment Day 2023, Beating Plastic Pollution”. He discussed types of plastic and said that only 10% of plastics present in the environment are recyclable. He urged to adopt the principle of 4Rs in their lifestyle, ‘refuse, reduce, reuse and recycle’ to minimise the plastic load in the environment
Dr. Dhrubo Jyoti Sarkar, Senior Scientist, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore delivered a Guest Lecture on, ‘Impact of microplastic pollution on the environment’. He discussed about the presence of microplastics in Ganga and how increasing plastic pollution in water bodies has reduced fisher’s income as in catches include more plastic than fishes. Dr. Sarkar also discussed about microplastic-associated fish pathogens which harm fish fauna in resources.
On this occasion a manual titled ‘Paryavaran sanrakshan ke liye janbahgidaari samay kee awashyakta’ was also released.
An extempore competition on Plastic pollution was also organised in which staff and students of ICAR-NBFGR participated wholeheartedly.
The programme was attended by all the staff of ICAR-NBFGR, Lucknow while staff and students of Kochi Centre and ARTU Chinhat Unit attended the programme on online mode.
