Two new species of Congrid eel, belonging to the genus Ariosoma, have been discovered by ICAR- National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources. The species collected from the Gulf of Mannar, Tamil Nadu has been named Ariosoma “kannani” and the species from Kochi coast, Kerala has been named Ariosoma “gracile”.
The holotype specimens of both new species are registered at the National Fish Museum-cum-Repository of the ICAR-NBFGR, Lucknow. The discovery was published in the internationally renowned peer-reviewed journal “Zoosystematics and Evolution”. To explore the poorly studied fish group of Anguilliformes, the ICAR-NBFGR has made a noteworthy discovery once again, as the institute has discovered 12 eels from Tamil Nadu and Kerala in the recent past.
