ICAR- National Bureau of Soil Survey and Land Use Planning (NBSS & LUP), Regional Centre, Kolkata launched a Pilot Project on Crop Diversification at Amainagar (J/L No 736), a tribal village of Jhargram district of West Bengal on Nov 2, 2023. On that occasion a two -day farmers’ capacity building programme was organized on 2-3 November 2023 in the village where 45 farmers and farm women attended.
ICAR-NBSS & LUP RC Kolkata is the Nodal centre of Eastern India in implementation of Crop diversification project through the introduction of crops in rice-fallow lands with the aim to enhance the farmer's income and their livelihood.
Dr. F. H. Rahman, Head, NBSS&LUP RC Kolkata briefed about the objectives and importance of the project. He said rice-fallow lands will be brought under alternative and profitable crops/ cropping systems while preferences will be given to pulses and oilseed crops.
The complete programme will be carried out using geospatial technology and initial support for this pilot project will be provided to the farmers as critical input. Successful programmes may be extended further in other areas by line departments with the technical support of the research institute.
