ICAR-NRC on Yak celebrates 35th Foundation Day

ICAR-National Research Centre on Yak, Dirang, celebrated its 35th Foundation Day here today under the befitting theme, “Promotion of Yak Herders and Yak products through Research and Extension.

Dr. Soumen Sahu, Professor & Head, Fishery Economics and Statistics, West Bengal University of Animal & Fishery Sciences, was the Chief Guest of the event.

Shri. J.T.Obi, ADC, Dirang and Dr. Rajan Gupta, Former Principal Scientist, ICAR, were the Guests of Honour.

Dr. Jayanta Ghosh, Assistant Prof & Coordinator, CRSGPP, West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences & Secretary, National GI Drive Mission, was the Special Guest.

Dr. Mihir Sarkar, Director, ICAR-NRC on Yak, delivered a presentation on the organization's activities, accomplishments, and aspirations during the program. He emphasised the institute's focus on sustainability, genetic improvement, conservation, value addition, livelihood security, and overall yak farming through sedentarization programs. Dr, Sarkar, also emphasised the importance of genetic conservation and multiplication of yak germplasm.  Dr. Sarkar accentuated the institute's achievements, including obtaining the GI tag for Arunachal Pradesh Yak Churpi, approving a bankable scheme for profitable yak rearing by NABARD, and initiating the formation of a cooperative society to unite all yak husbandry stakeholders for sustainable yak husbandry.

The programme was attended by the GBs of the yak rearing villages, yak herders of West Kameng, HODs of Agri & allied departments including the Director, NIMAS, Commandant of 4th Bn ITBP, 30th Bn SSB and 16th Bn of Madras Regiment besides the scientists, officers and staff of the institute.
