Dr. Himanshu Pathak, Secretary (DARE) and Director General (ICAR), visited ICAR- Research Complex for Eastern Region, FSRCHPR, Ranchi today. He was accompanied by Dr. Anup Das, Director, ICAR-RCER, Patna, Dr. Sujay Rakshit, Director, ICAR-Indian Institute of Agricultural Biotechnology, Ranchi, Dr. Anjani Kumar, Director, ICAR-Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute, Patna, and Dr. Ujjwal Kumar, I/c Head, Socio-Economic Extension Division, ICAR-RCER, Patna.
Dr. Pathak inaugurated the mother block by planting the first sapling of the litchi variety Swarna Madhu and the block is named as “Dr. Himanshu Pathak Litchi Mother Block”. Swarna Madhu is a high-yielding (approx. 50 kg per plant from 10th year onwards), regular fruiting, ripening in 80 to 85 days and fruit borer resistant litchi variety of Bedana group (small seeded) which is suitable for commercial cultivation in Jharkhand. He emphasized estimating the gap between the demand and supply of quality seed and planting material and future strategies to meet the demands of farmers and advised them to work for the integration of natural resource management in horticultural crops.
Dr. Das and Dr. Arun Kumar Singh, Head, highlighted various advanced technologies developed by the Centre such as solar pump sizing tool, improved varieties of basmati soybean, grafted tomato, brimato (brinjal and tomato grafted on single rootstock), improved varieties of pointed gourd, characterization of native chickens and animals, integrated farming system, etc.
100 saplings of Swarna Madhu were planted by the dignitaries and scientists of the Centre. The scions from this mother block will produce sufficient quality planting material of litchi for supply in Jharkhand and neighboring states in the future.
