Farmer Fair and Capacity building programme for augmenting fish farmers' income organised

ICAR-National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources, Lucknow, organized a farmer fair and capacity-building programme aimed at enhancing the livelihoods of fisher folk and aquaculture farmers at College of Fisheries, Lembucherra, Agartala, Tripura today under the NEH (North Eastern Hill) and STC (Scheduled Tribe Component) programme of ICAR-NBFGR. 

The event was organised under the guidance of the Chief Guest, Dr Uttam Kumar Sarkar, Director, ICAR-NBFGR in collaboration with the College of Fisheries, Lembucherra, Agartala, and ICAR RC for NEH Regional Centre, Tripura. 

Dr Sarkar, stated that Tripura has great fisheries and aquaculture potential. Exploration, documentation, characterization, and conservation of aquatic genetic resources is important for sustainable management, he added. He also urged the young entrepreneurs to attend advanced training at ICAR-NBFGR, Lucknow in the field of aquaculture and aquatic health management. 

Shri Debasish Basu, IAS, Former Secretary, Govt of Tripura; Dr R. K. Saha, Vice-Chancellor, Techno India University, Agartala and Dr Biswajit Das, Principal Scientist, ICAR RC for NEH Regional Centre, Tripura graced the occasion as the Guests of Honor.

Shri Basu, urged the farmers to make maximum use of such opportunities and interact with the experts. 

Dr Saha, briefed about the status of fisheries in Tripura and stated that aquatic health management is essential to boost production. 

A farmer-scientist interactive technical session was organized addressing various aspects of aquatic health management and aquaculture for sustainable livelihood management. Important aquaculture-related input materials including quality IMC and singhi seed, feed, fishing nets, and lime were distributed to stakeholders to support their livelihood.

A total of 300 fish farmers including about 75 women from 5 villages participated in the programme.
