In a landmark development for the field of Coldwater Fisheries Research in India, the ICAR-Directorate of Coldwater Fisheries Research (ICAR-DCFR), Bhimtal, was officially elevated to the status of ICAR-Central Institute of Coldwater Fisheries Research (CICFR). The momentous occasion was celebrated at the institute’s campus in Bhimtal, today.
Dr Himanshu Pathak, Secretary (DARE) & Director General (ICAR), served as the Chief Guest. He highlighted the vital role of coldwater fisheries in food security, livelihoods, and ecological sustainability. He lauded the institute's efforts in developing innovative technologies and organizing training programs that have supported fish farmers and stakeholders in the Himalayan and other coldwater regions of India. Dr Pathak emphasized that the elevation to a Central Institute reflects the dedication and vision of the institute's scientists and staff. With enhanced autonomy, it will now play a key role in transformative research, contributing to India’s goal of becoming a global leader in fisheries and aquaculture, he added.
Dr J.K. Jena, Deputy Director General (Fisheries Science), Dr Devika Pillai, Assistant Director General (Inland Fisheries), and Dr Yashpal Singh Malik, Joint Director, ICAR-Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Mukteshwar, also congratulated the Director and staff for their dedicated efforts in establishing the institute as a center of excellence. They expressed confidence that the institute’s new status would enhance its ability to tackle key challenges in coldwater fisheries, including climate change adaptation, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable aquaculture practices.
Dr Pramod Kumar Pandey, Director, ICAR-DCFR, highlighted the remarkable achievements of the institution over the years, highlighting its contributions to scientific research, capacity building, and technological innovations in coldwater fisheries and aquaculture. Dr Pandey said that the elevation to a Central Institute is not just a recognition of our past accomplishments but also a mandate for future growth and new status will enable us to expand our research horizons, foster international collaborations, and play a pivotal role in addressing the challenges faced by the coldwater fisheries sector.
The ceremony marked a key milestone for the institution, which has been a leader in coldwater fisheries research and sustainable aquaculture practices in the Indian Himalayan Region. The elevation of ICAR-DCFR to a Central Institute is set to drive further advancements in research and education, offering innovative solutions to meet the sector's growing demands. With its expanded mandate, the institute is positioned to enhance the livelihoods of millions dependent on coldwater fisheries while ensuring environmental sustainability for future generations.
All staff members, including scientists, technical, and administrative officials, were present on the occasion.
