A Workshop on “Ichthyotaxonomy: Journey from conventional to molecular methods” jointly organised by ICAR-National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources and Fishery Survey of India was inaugurated by Dr. R. Jeyabaskaran, Director General, FSI Office, Kochi (Kerala) today to ignite young minds to initiate research in ichthyotaxonomy.
Dr U.K. Sarkar, Director, ICAR-NBFGR; Shri. M. Habibullah, Director, CIFNET; Dr. Shine Kumar, Director, NIFPHAAT; Dr. Sijo P. Varghese, Zonal Director, FSI, Kochin; Dr. T. T. Ajith Kumar, Head PAGR Centre of ICAR-NBFGR, Kochi, Scientists of FSI and NBFGR were present during the inaugural function.
Dr. Jeyabaskaran emphasised on the importance of fish taxonomy and the need to organise workshops to train personnel who can document the fishery resources of the Country.
Dr. Sarkar briefed about the importance of integrated taxonomy and its utility in cataloguing valuable marine fishery resources and existing new species from the institute belonging to the peninsular marine waters.
About 45 participants from various research and academic organisations nationwide attended the workshop.
