Howrah Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Jagatballabpur, West Bengal, under the supervision of Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, organized a one-day "Millet Mela" on its campus today to raise awareness among high school and college students, progressive farmers, including farm women, about the health and nutritional benefits of millets as part of the yearlong celebration of the International Year of Millet 2023. Dr. Barui welcomed the dignitaries and participants of the programme and discussed the theme of the ‘Millet Mela’.
Dr. Pradip Dey, Director of the ICAR-ATARI in Kolkata, who was the chief guest, emphasized the value of millets as a crop that is resistant to climate change, has a low water footprint, and can help fight diseases like diabetes. He pushed farmers to establish FPOs to market millet-based products since they were extremely profitable. Prof. U. Thapa, DEE, BCKVV, discussed the significance of millets for their nutritional value in his presidential address. Dr. S. Banerjee, Assistant Professor at BCKV, highlighted a variety of millet farming approaches and their potential in West Bengal.
Dr. K. Barui, SSH of the Howrah KVK; Dr. S. N. Khara, DHO, Howrah; Mrs. Arunima, District Youth Officer, Howrah; Mr. S. Saha, ADA, Jagatballavpur; SMSs and other Howrah KVK staff; 75 students from various high schools and colleges, 50 progressive farmers, including farm women, from several blocks in the Howrah district, 46 members of the Nehru Yuva Kendra youth club, 30 members of various SHGs, 78 students from DAESI, and many more people attended the event.
