ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, organized -cum-training programme (27-28 March 2017) for the senior officials of NABARD (National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development) Assam, on, ‘‘Improved farming practices for enhancing productivity and income of farmers’’.
Dr. S.V. Ngachan, Director, ICAR RC for NEH Region, emphasized the need of adopting location specific farming approaches for doubling farmer’s income in the region with particular reference to Assam. Additional 5-6 million tonnes of food-grains are needed in the next few decades to feed the population of region and Assam will have to play a pivotal role for the same, he added. He called for the measures such as quality seed production and availability, locational specific integrated and organic farming systems, adoption of multiple stress tolerant varieties especially floods and droughts along with adequate technology back stopping to achieve the desired goal of self-sufficiency in food grain production.
Dr. B.C. Deka, Director, ICAR-ATARI, emphasized on the need for bringing vast rice fallow areas of the north east particularly Assam under double cropping by cultivating pulses, oilseeds etc, for enhancing cropping intensity, income and food security of the region. He further added that Krishi Vigyan Kendras and NABARD should work hand in hand for agricultural development in the region.
Smt. Rajashree K. Baruah, Chief General Manager, NABARD, Guwahati, stressed upon strengthening convergence between ICAR and NABARD to formulate and implement effective programmes for the betterment of the farming community of the region.
The valedictory program, Shri. S. S Saha, General Manager, NABARD, Assam urged the DDMs to apply the knowledge gained in the programme for implementation in their respective Districts.
The objective of the programme was to equip officials on various recent technologies for their possible implementations through various NABARD schemes.
A total of 20 NABARD officials including General Manager, Deputy General Manager and Assistant General Manager and District Development Mangers (DDMs) from Assam participated in the programme.
