6th International Hybrid Rice Research Symposium Inaugurated

6th International Hybrid Rice Research Symposium Inaugurated  Shri K. Lakshmi Narayana, Minister of Agriculture, Govt. of Andhra Pradesh inaugurated 6th International Hybird Rice Research Symposium here today. While speaking as Chief Guest, Shri Naryanan called upon the scientists, farmers and political leaders to come forward to meet the challenges in rice production and adopt latest techniques to enhance productivity. He congratulated ICAR for developing improved basmati and hybrid rice varieties.

6th International Hybrid Rice Research Symposium Inaugurated  Dr. Robert S. Zeigler, Director General, International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), Philippines, in his inaugural speech, expressed his concern regarding prevailing drought conditions in Asia and other parts of globe. He stressed upon the need to develop new varieties of hybrid rice which need lesser water for cultivation.

6th International Hybrid Rice Research Symposium Inaugurated  Prof. Longping Yuan, Director General, China National Hybrid Rice R&D Centre, known as father of hybrid rice, emphasized the significant role of hybrid rice in sustaining food security in the developing countries like China and India.

6th International Hybrid Rice Research Symposium Inaugurated  Shri Ashish Bahuguna, Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Co-operation, Govt. of India said that in spite of advantages of hybrid technology, we have to address many challenging issues related to food requirement of the country.

6th International Hybrid Rice Research Symposium Inaugurated  Dr. S. Ayyappan, Secretary, DARE and DG, ICAR said this symposium would be the guiding force to draw the road map for developing the hybrid rice technology further. He also elaborated upon capacity building programs and new initiatives in the forthcoming 12th plan with Farmer First approach.

Dr. S K Dutta, Deputy Director General (Crop Science), ICAR said there is a challenge to develop mega hybrid rice to meet the requirement of future. He urged other agencies in government and private sector for active participation in the development of hybrid rice consortium in public-private partnership mode.

Earlier, Dr. B.C. Viraktamath, Project Director, Directorate of Rice Research, Hyderabad delivered welcome address.

Dr. Eero Nissila, Co Chair, IRRI proposed the vote of thanks.

The three-day (10-12 September) Symposium organized by the International Rice Research Institute and the Directorate of Rice Research, Indian Council of Agricultural Research aims to create a discussion platform that tackles the issue of increasing rice yields to adapt to the worlds' increasing demand for rice. Concurrently, an exhibition is also arranged to showcase latest developments in hybrid rice technology. Relevant ICAR Institutes are participating in the expo including Directorate of Knowledge Management in Agriculture.
Hybrid rice researchers and experts from around the globe and representatives from the public and private sectors are participating in the event.
