On the occasion of its 14th Foundation Day, National Research Centre on Litchi (NRCL), Muzaffarpur organized a workshop on ‘Geographical Indicator (GI) for Litchi’ on 6th June, 2014.
Dr. R.K. Mittal, Vice Chancellor, Rajendra Agricultural University (RAU), Pusa, Samastipur inaugurated the function as Chief Guest. In his address, Dr. Mittal emphasized upon the role of sustainable technologies in the era of globalization under changing climate scenario. He also discussed about the GI for its uniqueness of the produce and the role of NRCL for uplifting the productivity of litchi in the country.
The Director, Horticulture, Government of Bihar and Principal Secretary (Planning), Government of Bihar were the Guest of Honour on the occasion.
Earlier, Prof. (Dr.) Vishal Nath, Director NRCL welcomed the dignitaries and presented brief account of achievements made by the Centre.
Scientists from different units of DST also delivered lectures on GI Registration process, Patent and its importance on the occasion.
An ‘All India Litchi Show-cum Farmers’ Gosthi’ was also organized on the occasion. Queries were raised by various stakeholders and views of experts were offered during the interaction session. The Centre felicitated five progressive litchi growers on this occasion for demonstration of leadership in litchi production and cool chain management in the region.
More than 200 farmers from Muzaffarpur, Vaishali, Samastipur, Sitamarhi, and West Champaran district of Bihar were present on this occasion. About 100 farmers brought their litchi for exhibition.
Representative from MSME, NHB, Bihar State Horticulture Mission, ICAR Institutes and Agricultural Universities participated in the function.
This programme was sponsored by the DST-TIFAC to make the litchi growers and clusters aware about the importance and methods for GI registration.
