Secretary (DARE) and Director General (ICAR) inaugurates International Training-cum-Workshop on “Sustainable Fisheries and Dairy”

International Training-cum-Workshop on “Sustainable Fisheries and Dairy” under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) of the Ministry of External Affairs, Govt. of India, was inaugurated by the Chief Guest Dr. Himanshu Pathak, Secretary (DARE) and Director General (ICAR) today at ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore. The 14-day training programme from 6th - 19th December 2023 aims towards capacity building for the countries in the global south particularly in the Indo-Pacific region.

Dr. Pathak highlighted the global importance of the fisheries and dairy sector for food and nutritional security and underlined the contribution of expertise from the participating countries. He released the publication of the “Training manual” and “Training handbook” during the inaugural session.

Ms. Paramita Tripathi, IFS, Joint Secretary, Indo-Pacific Division, Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, stressed the future collaboration with countries in the Mekong region and urged the participants to strengthen the knowledge gap through learning sessions.

Dr. J. K. Jena, Deputy Director General, Fisheries and Animal Sciences, highlighted the significant contributions of fisheries and dairy research institutes to India's economy.

Dr. B. K. Das, Director ICAR-CIFRI emphasised the regional capacity building programme for efficiently extending the knowledge and skills of professionals who are involved in the inland open water fisheries and dairy management through bilateral co-operation of India with the participating countries.

Prof. Shyam Sundar Dana, Vice Chancellor, West Bengal University of Animal and Fisheries Science, instigate participants to upgrade their knowledge and skills by learning the latest developments in the fisheries and dairy sector.

A total of 24 participants representing Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar and Vietnam (CLMV) are participating in the programme.
