ICAR – Indian Institute of Spices Research and Indian Society for Spices (ISS), Kozhikode, Kerala organized a farmer's Seminar on "Scientific and Technological Approaches for Sustainable Spices Production" today at ICAR-IISR, Regional Station, Appangala, Madikeri, Karnataka.

Professor Ashok S Alur, Vice-Chancellor, Kodagu University, Kushalnagar, Kodagu District, Karnataka inaugurated the program. He highlighted the importance of enhancing the value of spices to boost the market presence and global recognition of Indian spices in the world economy. He also inaugurated an exhibition aimed at showcasing the technologies developed by ICAR-IISR for the benefit of farmers.

Dr. R Dinesh, Director, ICAR-IISR, Kozhikode presided over the meeting and emphasised the importance of improving the overall quality of spice production in the country for sustainable development. He also underscored the need for embracing innovative technologies and new varieties in spice cultivation.

Dr. K. Kandiannan, Principal Scientist, ICAR-IISR and President, ISS, briefed the history of ISS and society's efforts in enhancing the standards of spice cultivation and ensuring the production of safe spices.

During the event, a high-yielding hybrid of Black pepper named IISR Chandra was unveiled. An e-newsletter from ISS and an e-manual containing seminar lecture notes and a leaflet from ISS were also released.

The seminar covered the topics of recent advances in improved varieties, production, and plant protection technologies of black pepper, cardamom, and ginger.

A total of 150 farmers participated in the event hailing from diverse regions of Karnataka and Kerala.
