Shri Avnish Patel from Bangalipur village, Varanasi constructed a naturally ventilated polyhouse in 0.25 acre area with a subsidy from the state horticulture department of Uttar Pradesh. But due to wrong sowing time and lack of proper management practices his tomato crop failed in the net house. He faced a huge loss and abandoned the net house.
A team of scientists from ICAR-Indian Institute of Vegetable Research, Varanasi, visited the poly house in the month of July 2021. After primary inspection, it was evident that, due to lack of technical knowledge in protected cultivation, the tomato crop failed and the scientists decided to adopt the polyhouse for demonstration of capsicum and tomato cultivation.
The technical support was rendered by the scientists of ICAR-IIVR for growing Capsicum var. Swarna Atulya and two hybrids of private companies namely Rehana and Huntington. All schedules for cultural operations were given to him beforehand and real-time monitoring of every operation were done by the scientists.
Shri Avnish Patel harvested capsicum 15 times (up to the 2nd week of May 2022) resulted in total production of 2864 kg in seven months’ duration and earning net income of Rs. 1.27 lakhs from 0.25 acre.
Shri Avnish Patel exhibited this technology at the International Conference on vegetable research and innovations for nutrition, entrepreneurship, and environment (ICVEG-21) organised at ICAR-IIVR during 14-16 December 2021.
A field day on protected cultivation was organized on 17th February 2022 for showcasing the technology to other farmers Dr. T. K. Behera, Director, ICAR-IIVR has assured to extend technological support for other poly house holders in eastern Uttar Pradesh.
