Workshop on Carbon Trading in Agriculture was held at National Agriculture Science Complex, New Delhi, today.
Dr. Himanshu Pathak, Secretary (DARE) & Director General (ICAR), emphasised the need for major challenges in carbon trading and set the roadmap for ICAR to develop appropriate methodologies and take forward the carbon trading initiatives in consultation with the stakeholders.
Dr. SK Chaudhari, DDG (NRM), ICAR, highlighted the agenda points for the discussion.
Shri. Franklin L. Khobung, Joint Secretary (NRM/RFS), briefed about the carbon trading initiatives taken by the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare.
Dr. B.S Dwivedi, Member, ICAR-Agricultural Scientist Recruitment Board, Dr. Rajbir Singh, ADG (AAF & CC), ICAR, Dr. J.K Jena, Deputy Director General (FS & AS), Shri. Takayuki Hagiwara, Country Representative (FAO), ADGs and other senior officers from ICAR attended the workshop.
The importance of agro-forestry and horticulture in carbon sequestration, challenges in monitoring, reporting and verification of carbon credits and the role of ICAR in this endeavor was discussed in detail.
Dr. VK Singh, Director, The ICAR-Central Research Institute for Dryland Agriculture set the context for the workshop through his presentation.
A total of 56 participants including representatives from various departments of the Ministry attended the programme.
