A concluding workshop of the NICRA project “Impact of Climate Change in Inland Fisheries and Development of Adaptive Strategies” was organized at ICAR- Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Kolkata today.
The Chief Guest, Dr. P. Dey, Director, ICAR-ATARI, Kolkata, said “We are now near the 6th species extinction event because of drastic climate change, and therefore climate-related studies in inland fisheries should be strengthened and studies of reproductive vulnerability and breeding phenology of fishes are of utmost importance for breeding point of view”.
Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore & PI, NICRA project, briefed the project's 12-year phases, objectives, and achievements. He highlighted climate change issues in inland open water fisheries, vulnerability assessments in Indian rivers, floodplain wetlands, and coastal wetlands, and developed adaptation strategies against climate change's impact. He also assessed carbon sequestration potential and greenhouse gas emissions in floodplain wetlands.
The Guest of honour Prof. B.B. Jana, University of Kalyani, West Bengal, said CIFRI should continue its work on inland fisheries and climate change by utilising cutting-edge methods like stable isotope analysis of environmental chemicals.
Experts encouraged ICAR-CIFRI to uplift coastal fishers' livelihoods and raise awareness about climate-resilient fish culture processes. Fish farmers from remote coastal areas shared their experiences and satisfaction with the technology, highlighting its potential to double their revenue.
